Zakat Policy

Zakat is an obligation, not a donation, and it may only be spent on people and purposes that qualify for it. We therefore record Zakat separately from every other kind of gift, and we do not mix the two.

How we handle your Zakat

• When you select Zakat on the donation form, that gift is recorded under a separate gift type in our records and reported separately in our accounts.
• Zakat is applied only to Zakat-eligible use — principally support for students and families who qualify, and direct assistance to those in need.
• Zakat is not spent on construction, administration, salaries of general staff, or equipment.

What your Zakat funds here

• Fees, boarding, books and living costs for students from families who cannot meet them.
• Food, ration and medical assistance for families in need.
• Emergency relief for households displaced by flooding.

What it does not fund

• The Campus Development Project, which is funded by general donations and Sadaqah Jariyah.
• General running costs of the institute.

Other kinds of giving

• Sadaqah — a voluntary gift, which may be applied to any of our work.
• Sadaqah Jariyah — giving with an ongoing benefit, such as classrooms, a library or teaching provision.
• Fitrana / Zakat-ul-Fitr — collected and distributed in the appropriate season.
• Qurbani — arranged in season; please contact us before sending Qurbani funds so we can confirm arrangements and timing.

If you are unsure

If you are not certain whether a gift should be Zakat, select Sadaqah — it can be applied to anything, so nothing is lost. If you would like to know precisely how Zakat received was spent, ask us and we will tell you.

Note for the institute: this page states that Zakat is segregated in your accounts. The website now records it separately and reports it separately on the CRM dashboard. Please confirm your bookkeeping matches this promise before you publicise the page, and amend the wording if your practice differs.
